Microsoft Windows Server Standard Core 2019 is licensed per physical processor core.
This license covers 16 physical cores. To determine the number of licenses required for licensing a physical server, the following formula is used: (number of server processors) x (number of cores per processor) / 2
Note: For each physical server, it is mandatory to license a minimum of 16 cores, which means 1 license.
Once the physical server is licensed with Windows Server Standard Core 2019, up to 2 virtual instances of Windows Server Standard can be installed without needing additional licenses. If more virtual instances of Windows Server are desired on the licensed physical server, additional Windows Server Standard Core licenses can be purchased. For every two new virtual instances, the physical server is licensed once more. For more virtual instances of Windows Server, one can opt for the Windows Server Datacenter Core 2019 license (SKU: 9EA-01045 or 9EA-01044). This allows running any number of Windows Server instances in virtual once the physical server is properly licensed. As a general rule, the Standard edition is intended for physical or lightly virtualized environments, while the DataCenter edition serves virtualized environments.
Note: This license allows downgrading to previous versions and does not include Software Assurance and is intended for commercial organizations!
It is licensed together with CAL (Client Access License) licenses, which are necessary for users who wish to connect to the server. User CAL and Device CAL licenses are identifiable by SKU codes: R18-05768 or R18-05767.
To purchase OLP (Open License Program) licenses, it is necessary to open a framework contract valid for 2 years. To open the contract, an initial order of at least 5 licenses is required. Subsequently, any quantities can be ordered.
The Single Language (SNGL) license grants the right to use each product instance in any language.
