Teltonika RUT986 – Industrial 4G LTE Cat 4 Enterprise Router with RS232, RS485, GNSS and eSIM

The Teltonika RUT986 is an industrial global LTE Cat 4 router powered by a Telit modem, with dual serial interfaces (RS232 and RS485) and an extended I/O set, designed for distributed industrial infrastructures requiring long-term reliable cellular connectivity and data collection from diverse field equipment. Industrial routers with serial ports and support for Modbus, DNP3, and OPC UA are deployed in utility management, critical infrastructure monitoring, and SCADA networks where connecting legacy equipment is an operational requirement. The RUT986 combines global LTE, integrated GNSS, four Ethernet ports, dual serial interfaces, and analog and digital I/O in a compact platform suited for large-scale industrial deployments.

The Telit-based LTE Cat 4 module delivers download speeds up to 150 Mbps and upload up to 50 Mbps, with automatic switching between two physical SIM cards and one eSIM — including eSIM bootstrap for initial profile download without on-site visits. The hardware platform features a Mediatek MIPS processor at 580 MHz, 128 MB DDR2 RAM, and 32 MB NOR Flash, sized for stable operation in field conditions. The extended I/O includes a dry digital input, galvanically isolated digital input, analog input 0–24 V with 4–20 mA support, open-collector output, and SPST relay output at 40 V/4 A, complemented by an internal microSD slot for storage expansion up to 2 TB.

Running RutOS (OpenWrt-based), the RUT986 integrates with Teltonika RMS for centralized zero-touch management, FOTA firmware updates, and real-time monitoring. Industrial protocol support covers Modbus RTU/TCP (RS232, RS485, USB), BACnet IP/RS485, OPC UA, DNP3 (RS232, RS485, TCP), and DLMS/COSEM, with a Modbus-MQTT gateway for transmitting data to cloud platforms. The VPN stack includes OpenVPN, IPsec IKEv2, WireGuard, ZeroTier, and DMVPN, while the integrated GNSS module covers GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, and QZSS with configurable geofencing and NTRIP protocol support.
